How Ecofiestas La Paz Is Bringing Reusable Partyware to Celebrations in Mexico

We’re really proud to welcome Ecofiestas La Paz to the Party Kit Network. Not only because the kit is already off to a great start, but because it marks an important milestone for us.
Ecofiestas La Paz is our first party kit in Mexico, showing just how adaptable the party kit idea is across different countries, cultures and communities. At its heart, the idea is simple: borrowing reusable partyware instead of buying single-use items. But the impact can be huge.
Ecofiestas La Paz is run by Mercedes, a marine biologist and mum to a five-year-old son, who launched her party kit in August 2025.
Why Ecofiestas La Paz started
Mercedes has always cared deeply about the environment. As a marine biologist, litter and waste aren’t abstract problems - they’re issues she sees the effects of first-hand.
At the same time, like many parents, she found herself attending multiple children’s birthday parties each year, often with disposable plates, cups and decorations used once and then thrown away.
Starting a party kit felt like a practical way to tackle both concerns: reducing waste from celebrations while offering families a realistic alternative to single-use party supplies.
“I was at a scientific conference listening to an analysis of the solid waste generation in my city. At that moment, something clicked in my mind and I thought, I can do something about this. After that conference, I decided to start Ecofiestas.”
Getting started (and sticking with it)
Ecofiestas La Paz officially launched in August 2025. Like many community-led projects, the early months have been about building awareness, finding customers and staying patient.
The response so far has been encouraging. Mercedes has formed alliances with local civil associations working in similar areas and has relied heavily on word of mouth to spread the idea. She already has repeat customers using the kit, while continuing to put in the work needed to make the project better known across her city.
Running a party kit isn’t about instant success - it’s about perseverance, consistency and trusting that momentum will grow over time.
Helping people see the impact
One of the things Mercedes enjoys most is helping customers understand the difference they’re making.
Ecofiestas La Paz uses the Party Kit Network’s waste calculator to show how much rubbish is avoided when people choose to borrow reusable partyware instead of buying disposables. For many customers, seeing the numbers makes the impact feel real and tangible.
Ecofiestas is currently the only party kit of its kind in the region, so the concept is still new. A big part of the work is raising awareness, not just about reusable partyware, but about avoiding waste more broadly.
Being first has meant mixed initial reactions, but as Mercedes puts it:
“When I tell them that they don’t have to do the dishes, they smile.”

So far, Ecofiestas La Paz has been used for a wide range of celebrations, including:

Adult birthday parties
School events
Office celebrations
It’s a great reminder that party kits aren’t just for one type of event — they work wherever people come together to celebrate.

For Mercedes, running Ecofiestas La Paz has been rewarding in several ways. She’s enjoyed connecting with people who share similar values, building a small business that provides an additional income, and knowing that every booking helps reduce waste in her community.
It’s proof that party kits can sit at the intersection of community action, environmental care and viable local enterprise.

“Any effort to reduce waste generation is very valuable. I invite you to investigate a little about all the places where microplastics are already found, so you can see how valuable this effort to decrease the generation of single-use plastics is.”
